Anthony Butts was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He has earned a B.A. in English from Wayne State University, his M.A. and M.F.A. from Western Michigan University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, Columbia. Fifth Season was his first book. Anthony Butts is also the author of the book Evolution (Sutton Hoo Press, 1998), with woodcuts by Thomas Huck and his third book of poetry, Little Low Heaven, is scheduled for release in January, 2003, from New Issues Poetry & Prose. Recent poems appear in the following anthologies: Giant Steps: The New Generation of African–American Writers; American Poetry: The Next Generation; Abandon Automobile: Detroit City Poetry 2001; and the Passages 11 Anthology (for Canadian high school students). Butts was the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Individual Artist Grant for 2001. Currently, he is Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Carnegie Mellon University.
