Auditions

The School of Music will have undergraduate audition days on November 5, 2010 for January 2011 enrollment and February 4, February 18 and March 11, 2011 for Fall 2011 enrollment. Graduate candidates are encouraged to audition on those dates, but can contact the Area Chair to schedule an audition on an alternate date if they have an irreconcilable conflict.

Any students who are unable to travel to campus because they live a great distance from Kalamazoo should send a recorded performance of the required audition repertoire to the Area Chair at the School of Music.

Piano students auditioning as undergraduates should prepare three memorized pieces: one from the Baroque era; one from the Romantic era or 20th/21st century; and a movement of a Classical sonata (Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven).

Piano students auditioning for scholarship consideration or graduate assistantship in jazz studies should be able to demonstrate their jazz experience by improvising on standard forms such as 12 bar blues or “Rhythm changes”, and perform a solo on a jazz standard.

Piano students auditioning for graduate study should prepare the following memorized pieces: A contrapuntal work from the Baroque era, an entire Classical sonata, a significant Romantic work and a work from the 20th or 21st Century.

Organ students should contact Dr. Karl Schrock for audition repertoire details.
