Our vibrant Keyboard Area in the WMU School of Music offers tremendous opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to bachelor’s and master’s degrees in piano and organ performance, we offer outstanding degree programs in music education, jazz studies, and music therapy.
Many of our graduates are admitted to prestigious schools for advanced study in performance and pedagogy; others are collaborative artists, piano teachers, organists and music directors in churches. We have alumni playing and directing on Broadway, working as opera or vocal coaches, jazz and studio musicians, composers, artist managers, music therapists, and band and choral directors.
Our keyboard area has approximately 35 undergraduate and 10 graduate students, while the School of Music (450 majors) is just the right size: Big enough to offer an array of experiences and support the required training, yet small enough that students have the option of initiating and fulfilling unique projects. All of our piano majors receive instruction from one of our committed faculty members. Our keyboard area faculty hear all piano students in a jury performance each semester, which ensures our ability to assess every student’s progress, and offer suggestions for improvements.
We offer talent-based scholarships for undergraduates and graduate students from the School of Music for those who audition by March 11, 2011. There is also a scholarship program for academically talented undergraduate students through the University for students who apply by December 15 [more information].
