All-Star Bands
Selection
Each high school band director in Michigan may nominate as many as four of his/her best players
for participation in the 120-member Samuel R. Hazo All-Star Band which
will rehearse and perform in James W. Miller Auditorium on Spring Conference day. Additional
nominees will participate in the conference's Richard Suddendorf Repertory Band.
This ensemble will read newly published and classic works for band including at least one work
by Andrew Boysen who will spend time with the ensemble. Band directors must mail their all-star
nomination form and
registration form no later than Friday 7 March.
Recorded Audition Recommended
We encourage each nominee to send a recorded audition (cassette or CD). First chair aspirants must include a recorded audition. A recorded audition will be especially helpful to an outstanding student who has not participated regularly in S/E festivals (on of the main criterion for selection). An individual cassette or CD for each candidate is required if a recorded audition is sent.
Recordings should include a "contest" solo. Recordings will be returned on April 3 (or by mail if the student is not present). All nominated students will be notified, at their home addresses, of their participation status no later than March 21. Samuel R. Hazo All-Star Band winners will receive music to prepare; All-Star Repertory Band winners will not need music in advance. All participants will be asked to pay a $10 fee when they arrive on April 3. Nominated students not placed in the all-star bands may still attend the conference free of charge.
