He is the Bobby McFerrin Professor of Jazz at Western Michigan University where he teaches classical and jazz piano; directs Gold Company, an internationally recognized jazz vocal ensemble; and performs as pianist with the Western Jazz Quartet, a resident faculty ensemble in the School of Music. Internationally recognized as a vocal jazz educator, he is also active as a classical and jazz pianist, conductor, clinician, and adjudicator.

Gold Company, his vocal jazz ensemble, has won numerous awards from Down Beat magazine, has toured throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and has performed at the MENC National Convention, IAJE National Convention, World Symposium on Choral Music, and with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Janis Siegel, Jon Hendricks, Mark Murphy, Don Shelton, and Bonnie Herman.

His arrangements have been published by Hal Leonard, Warner Bros., and Shawnee Press. He has produced several recordings including Mark Murphy Sings the Nat King Cole Songbook on Muse Records, and has authored The Complete Guide to Teaching Vocal Jazz published by Heritage Music Press.
