He studied theory
with Lewis Rowell and Alan Forte, musicology
with Carol McClintoch, and composition with
Elliott Carter, Quincy Porter, and Donald Martino.
He has co-authored
two books--Jazz Improvisation (Prentice-Hall)
and Twentieth Century Music (Macmillan)--and
is well known as a jazz pianist and composer.
Other interests
include the aesthetics of music, Schenkerian
analysis, and Bach-style counterpoint.
