James K. Bass is Director of Choral
Studies in the School of Music at Western Michigan University. He
conducts the University Chorale, Collegiate Singers, and Grand Chorus,
and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral conducting,
education, and literature. Previously he was on the faculty at the
University of Central Florida in Orlando. Bass received the Doctor of
Musical Arts degree from the University of Miami-Florida, and Master
of Music and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of
South Florida.
Bass' conducting experience includes a
variety of choral and orchestral ensembles including chamber choirs,
women's choruses, mixed-voice choirs, symphony orchestras, string
orchestras, and string chamber ensembles. He has conducted choral
ensembles at the University of Central Florida and University of
Miami-Florida, as well as the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay; and served
as choral director and head cantor at Holy Protection Ukrainian
Orthodox Church in Dover, Florida, and director of choral and orchestral
activities at Howard W. Blake High School for the Performing Arts in
Tampa, Florida. Since 2000 he has been conductor of the Tampa Bay Youth
Orchestra. A sampling of the choral masterworks he has conducted includes
Mahler's Second Symphony ("The Resurrection"),
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Verdi's Requiem, Orff's
Carmina Burana, and Mozart's Requiem.
As a bass soloist, he has performed in
Faure's Requiem, Schubert's Mass in G and Mass in
E-Flat, Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, and
Bach's Cantata No. 144. He also appeared in a presentation of
Cantatas by J.S. Bach in Carnegie Hall, and was an auditioned
member of Robert Shaw's workshop choir at Carnegie. Additionally, Bass
has served as a guest clinician for honor choirs and orchestras, and
adjudicator for choral and solo/ensemble festivals.
His professional affiliations include
the American Choral Directors Association, Music Educators National
Conference, American Symphony Orchestra League, Pi Kappa Lambda national
music honor society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity.
