The Western Brass Quintet was founded in 1966
in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA and is comprised of the brass professors at Western
Michigan University. The Quintet has established a reputation for excellence
over the past 36 years.
Notable achievements include performances at
the Kennedy Center; Carnegie Recital Hall; three International Trumpet Guild
Conferences; the International Horn Symposium, the International Trombone
Workshop; the T.U.B.A. Convention; tours to the People's Republic of China,
to Russia, Sweden, and to Germany; five recordings; and concerts at more than
100 American universities.
The Western Brass Quintet offers a variety
of classical programs ranging from Bach to Bernstein. Committed to promoting
the composition of significant works for the brass quintet, the ensemble has
premiered numerous works including Masques by Ramon Zupko, Nodding
Music by Elgar Howarth, Plays and Rimes by Curtis Curtis-Smith,
Pro and Contra Dances by Ramon Zupko, Vox Naturae (with
orchestra) by Ramon Zupko, Dark Matters by Mark Schultz, and
Landscapes by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Karel Husa. An
interest in authentic performance practices for the music of the Renaissance
and Baroque has inspired several significant arrangements of music from these
periods by Western Brass Quintet members.
