A Letter from the Artistic
Director
Dear Music Lovers, Alumni, and Friends,
The Donald P. Bullock Music Performance Institute (BPI)
is pleased to invite you, our friends and patrons, to attend
our concerts for 2007-08. This season we are pleased to
feature our Dalton Series presenting two
concerts this fall, the 25th Anniversary of the Dorothy
U. Dalton Center. The first, is a free modern dance “informance” by
Eddie Taketa of the renowned troupe Doug Varone and Dancers.
This event will feature student dancers from our own WMU
Department of Dance and will take place on the third floor
of the Dalton Center in Dance Studio “B”. Our
second Dalton Series event is a performance by the Silvia
Smith Percussion Duo, a fascinating all-women ensemble
centered around music that integrates percussion, spoken
language and theater. This concert is partially underwritten
by our School of Music, and its music sorority Sigma Alpha
Iota and fraternity Phi Mu Alpha.
It too remains a privilege for BPI to present the Faculty
Artists Series featuring our own internationally
acclaimed faculty and resident ensembles. This season
we proudly present concerts showcasing five members of
our dynamic Voice Area Faculty in a concert of solos,
duos, and ensemble pieces form the finest vocal and the
hottest operatic literature. The Western Brass
Quintet and the Western Wind Quintet, present their local
performances of remarkable works, which are always eagerly
awaited. And finally, a special CD Release concert by
the vibrant team of violinist Renata Artman Knific and
pianist Lori Sims. This concert is to celebrate, and
make available to the public, their acclaimed recording
of composer William Bolcom’s works for violin and
piano.
The School of Music is very pleased to continue presenting
the vibrant Young Concert Artists Series,
a project of the Irving
S. Gilmore Foundation. Over the
past two decades, this series has annually introduced four
extraordinary young classical musicians to this community
on their way towards achieving national and international
prominence. Since 1961 some of the brightest lights of
the classical music world are continually discovered and
presented by Young Concert Artists, Inc. We invite
you to be the first to hear the best. By popular demand,
this concerts series continues on selected Sunday afternoons
at 3 p.m.
These concerts continue to offer exciting and diverse
performances that would not otherwise be part of Kalamazoo's
rich cultural scene. Evening concerts this season will
begin at 8:15 p.m. and Sunday concerts at 3 p.m. Young
Concert Artists Series events will be highlighted
by interesting pre concert talks entitled "Words
Before Music." by WMUK classical music radio personality
Cara Lieurance. We hope you will accept this invitation
to experience the great variety of concerts presented by
the Donald P. Bullock Music Performance Institute as we
continue to celebrate music, "Elevating the human
condition through the arts." For more information
about the artists, tickets and the specific times and locations
of performances, please be sure to see the BPI website
at http://www.wmich.edu/mus_bpi/.
I personally encourage and invite you attend these special
events throughout the 2007-08 Season.
Sincerely
Yours,

Anders Dahlberg, Artistic Director
