Butler is home to several distinctive facilities, including Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium, with one of the largest telescopes in the state, and Clowes Memorial Hall, a 2200-seat facility which hosts concerts by internationally renowned artists as well as Butler students and faculty. Adjoining Clowes Hall is Lilly Hall, which houses the Jordan College of Fine Arts. In addition to offering both undergraduate and graduate music degrees, the College of Fine Arts offers degrees in dance, theater, and telecommunication arts. The music department consists of 67 faculty members, 24 of whom are full-time.
The twelfth largest city in the United States, Indianapolis has emerged in recent years as a leader in science, medicine, research and technology. Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Company is located in the city, as are two of the top eleven teaching hospitals in the country. In the past two decades, Indianapolis has become a major cultural center in the Midwest, with two professional dance troupes, two opera companies, the world's largest children's museum, and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indian and Western Art. Located within walking distance of Butler University is the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The city also serves as host for the quadrennial International Violin Competition.
