General Conference Information:
Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, is very pleased to serve as
host for the 1999 meeting of Music Theory Midwest on Friday and Saturday,
May 14-15.
Conference registration will begin on Friday, May 14 at 8:00 a.m. in Room 118 of Lilly Hall, which is the Fine Arts building located just to the left of Clowes Hall. Conference sessions will be held on the Butler campus. A highlight of the conference will be the keynote address by Dr. Bruno Nettl, Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who will speak on "Theory as National Emblem: The Persian Radif in World Music." Other special events include a reception following the keynote address Friday afternoon, an opportunity to hear the Indianapolis Opera production of Verdi's Macbeth on Friday evening, and a Saturday luncheon. The Arthur J. Komar Award for best student paper will be presented at the conclusion of the meeting.
Special Needs
The Butler campus is in the heart of the city of Indianapolis, within a
residential area. Housing accommodations, restaurants, and the heart of
downtown Indianapolis are all a short driving distance from the campus.
Most, if not all, of the conference hotels have barrier-free rooms which should be available to anyone who needs such accommodations. Interested persons should request these rooms when making reservations. The Butler campus is also accessible for all, and we will make every effort to make your visit as comfortable and stress-free as possible! For anyone who has child care needs or any other type of need during the conference, please contact Jeff Gillespie, Local Arrangements Chair.
Saturday Noon Luncheon
luncheon buffet is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 at noon, in the Reilly
Room on the Butler University campus. The cost is $13.00. Buffet includes 3
entrees. Complete menu: grilled lemon tarragon chicken breast, beef
burgundy, "Butler University Vegetable Special" (a delicious cilantro
pasta mixed with shitake mushrooms, artichokes, tomatoes, black olives,
and white wine), tossed garden salad, fresh fruit salad, confetti rice
pilaf, roasted rosemary red skin potatoes, green beans almondine, carrot
cake, coffee, iced tea. Please include payment for luncheon along with your pre-registration fee for the conference.
Macbeth: Indianapolis Opera Company
Friday evening, May 14, at 8 pm, the Indianapolis Opera Company will be presenting Verdi's Macbeth at Clowes Hall on the Butler campus. The opera will be accompanied by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and a pre-concert lecture will be delivered at 7:15. We are holding 40 tickets for purchase by MTMW conference attendees, at a 15% discount. Two prices are available: $11 and $24.
To reserve and purchase seats you must call the Ticket Line yourself, at 317-283-3470, and ask to speak with Ann Penny. Mention that you are with Music Theory Midwest. Your tickets will be waiting for you at the registration desk when you check in for the conference. Do not send payment for the opera tickets with your conference pre-registration fee! There is a deadline of May 7 for purchasing your opera tickets!! If you encounter any problems with making reservations, please contact Jeff Gillespie, Chair of Local Arrangements.
