General Information:

We extend our warmest invitation to attend this year's meeting of Music Theory Midwest to be held May 16-17, 2008 at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Our keynote speaker, John Covach, Professor of Music at the University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music, will speak on "When Things Just Don't Line Up: Textural Stratification in Rock Music." The program committee, chaired by Philip Stoecker (Oberlin College Conservatory), has selected an intriguing group of papers. Topics range from Renaissance Music and Sonata Theory to Serialism, Minimalism, and Harmony and Modality in Pop-rock Music. Sessions on Song, Opera, and Text-Music Relations examine vocal music topics, while sessions on Perception, Phenomenology, Philosophy; and Irony and Metaphor offer interpretive strategies. A session on Aural Skills Pedagogy rounds off the program.

There will be a conference dinner on Saturday night at a local restaurant, Cucina di Betto. On Friday evening, there will be a free pizza/drinks event for graduate students to get together with the keynote speaker. Grad students looking for housing with BGSU students should contact MTMW 2008 LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS:
