Music Theory Midwest

Seventeenth Annual Conference
Ball State University
12-13 May, 2006 - Muncie, IN

General Information:

This year's meeting of Music Theory Midwest is to be held Friday, May 12 - Saturday, May 13 at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. Our keynote speaker will be Gregory Proctor (Ohio State University), and he will speak on "Real and Apparent Simplicity in Musical Explanation, Occam's Razor and Music-theoretic Wormholes."

The program committee, chaired by Julian Hook (Indiana University), has selected a very interesting group of papers. Topics range from a session on Medieval and Renaissance Music to four sessions on Twentieth-century Music featuring composers such as Copland, Bartok, Aperghis, Ginastera, Rochberg, Crumb, Schoenberg, and Debussy. Two sessions address temporal issues: Time and Unity in Tonal Music; and Brahms and Metric Conflicts. Two sessions -- one on Wagner, and the other on Intervals, Transformations, and Tonnetze -- round out the program.

The banquet will be held Saturday evening at 6:30 in downtown Muncie, about two miles from campus, at Vera Mae's Bistro, 209 South Walnut St. Cost of the dinner is $25, including tax and gratuity; there will be a cash bar. Those who wish to attend the banquet will need to choose in advance between the two entrees: (1) grilled chicken with a red-pepper cream sauce, and (2) individual portobella mushroom Wellington with a red-wine reduction (vegetarian).
