Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV)

Hello, and welcome to the Western Michigan University Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle information site! Through this site, you will be able to find a variety of resources related to PHEV technology as well as information related to the combined PHEV and Wind Turbine research project currently being conducted here at Western Michigan University.

The PHEV used for the research being conducted is a Toyota Prius, with the PHEV conversion being performed by A123 Hymotion. Our research is specifically being centered around the energy production of a Skystream 3.7 (1.8 kW nominal) Wind Turbine and the energy consumption of the PHEV. We our looking to see if you can provide yourself with a consistent, free source of energy for your PHEV.

The lead faculty member involved in this project is Dr. John Patten. He owns the PHEV being used for this project and is also in charge of the Wind Turbine that operates next to the College of Engineering and Applied Science at Western Michigan University. Other project members involved include Karlis Kaugars from the Computer Science Dept., Dan Brimmer from the Physical Plant, and students Phil Chartier and Nathan Christensen

Clean Transportation Technology Innovation - Western Michigan University: WMU was recognized for its wind charged Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle program and project, Tuesday Sept. 29, at the Michigan Clean Transportation Expo and Awards Gala (MCT), In Novi Michigan.
