Opportunities for Students

Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Program
This program allows third and fourth year undergraduates to spend a semester or year studying mathematics in Budapest, Hungary. Admission criteria are high, but the rewards are great. A semester immersed in the mathematical culture of Budapest is an intellectual adventure of the very first rank. A wealth of information, including pictures and an electronic application form, is available online at www.stolaf.edu/depts/math/budapest. Presently, the program can accomodate about 40 students per semester. The deadline for applications for fall 2001 is April 30, 2001; early applications are encouraged.

Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges will continue their NSF-funded successful, intensive, four-week summer program (June 24 to July 22, 2001) designed to encourage talented undergraduate women to pursue advanced degrees in the mathematical sciences. The students will take two courses taught by women mathematicians who are excellent teachers and active professionals. In addition to the coursework there will be opportunities for recreational problem solving, discussions about graduate school and careers in mathematics, and twice-weekly colloquia.

Talented first and second year female mathematics students are encouraged to apply, no later than Feb. 20, 2001. For information or application materials, email Deanna Haunsperger at dhaunspe@carleton.edu, write to Summer Math Program, Math Department, Carleton College, Northfield, MN 55057, or visit http://www.mathcs.carleton.edu/smp/.

Pi Mu Epsilon Looking for Student Papers for Mathfest
The Pi Mu Epsilon Council encourages students who are interested in Mathfest 2001 to begin making plans soon. Members of Pi Mu Epsilon representing their chapters at this meeting are eligible for partial travel support. More information about Pi Mu Epsilon and application materials can be found at the PME web site: http://www.pme-math.org, or contact jgalovich@csbsju.edu.

Massachusetts Teacher Recruitment Program
Massachusetts has initiated a multi-faceted program to recruit, train, and retain high quality educators. The Massachusetts Signing Bonus program is open to qualified college seniors, recent graduates, and mid-career professionals in all academic areas, including mathematics, who have never been full-time public school teachers.
The program provides a $20,000 signing bonus. In addition, recipients will receive a scholarship for the Massachusetts Institute for New Teachers (MINT), an intensive seven-week teacher training program that includes 100 hours of student teaching and course work including methods of instruction, classroom management, and the use of technology.
The application deadline is January 31, 2001. For further information visit the web site www.doe.mass.edu/tqe/, or contact the Massachusetts Department of Education, by telephone at 781-338-3232 or by e-mail at eq@doe.masss.edu.

Mathematics Advanced Study Semesters(MASS) provides a comprehensive, semester-long mathematical environment for up to twenty-five talented undergraduate students from throughout the United States. The program, located at Penn State's University Park campus in State College, provides a mutually reinforcing blend of learning and research. MASS is an excellent way of preparing for the research requirements and rigors of graduate school.
Applicants will be accepted and considered until all slots in the program are filled. Forms can be obtained from our Web site or requested by phone, fax, -mail, or mail.
