Art received his Ph.D. in 1969, under the direction of Edward A. Nordhaus at
Michigan State University. He has been at WMU since then, taking one sabbatical
at Royal Holloway College and three more at Oxford University. His book with Norman
Biggs, Permutation Groups and
Combinatorial Structures, is out of print, as is Graphs, Groups and
Surfaces, Revised Edition. However, a new book Graphs of Groups on Surfaces: Interactions and Models was published in 2001. A topological graph theorist,
Art is particularly interested in modelling various finite structures (groups,
block designs, finite fields and finite geometries) via graph imbeddings in surfaces, and in studying
various probability spaces on such imbeddings. He has also studied change ringing, in the context of topological graph theory, and has composed three extents. His most recent book, "Math and the Other Arts", is being used as a coursepack for both Math 1900 and Math 4900. He has taught "Good Books" six times in the department of English. Currently he is serving on the Michigan State Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
