Three retire in December. Three long-time department faculty members --
Paul Eenigenburg, Radu Teodorescu, and Arthur White -- retired after the fall 2008 semester. Professors Eenigenburg and White each served Western for 40 years, beginning in 1969, and Teodorescu for 11 years. Their incomparable service and accomplishments were celebrated at a retirement dinner held in their honor on December 12. Best Wishes!

Steve Mackey joins tenure-track faculty. The department is pleased to announce that Steve Mackey joined the ranks of the department's tenure-track faculty as an assistant professor in January 2009. Before January, Steve served the department as a term instructor for 2.5 years. Steve is the husband of faculty member Nil Mackey. Welcome!

Eenigenburg and Zhang recognized by College. Professors Paul Eenigenburg (Emeritus) and Ping Zhang were recipients of a 2009 College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Achievement Award. Eenigenburg's award was to recognize exellence in Professional and Community Service. Zhang's award was to recognize excellence in Research and Creative activity. Each award carries a monetary amount to be used to support department activities. Congratulations!

Chartrand and Zhang debut new book. Professors Gary Chartrand (Emeritus) and Ping Zhang are the authors of the book, Chromatic Graph Theory, a 2009 publication of CRC Press. Chartrand and Ping are recognized internationally for their work in graph theory, and collaborated on two earlier books. Congratulations!

Dutta receives Frostic Award. Graduate student Anirban Dutta has been named a Gwen Frostic Doctoral Fellow by the WMU Graduate College. This highly competitive award is made to doctoral students engaged in exceptional research or creative endeavors, and will provide Anirban with $2000 in support. Dutta is working under the supervision of the department's Professor Jim Zhu in the area of financial mathematics. Congratulations!

AMS Meeting brings international attention to Western. The 2008 Fall Central Section Meeting of the American Mathematical Society was held on the WMU campus Oct 17-19. This event, hosted for the first time at Western, attracted about 250 mathematicians from across the US and several other nations. The meeting featured 15 special sessions on specialized topics, 205 special session talks, and 4 plenary talks. The meeting was held in the Fetzer Center, where the Department of Mathematics hosted a reception on Saturday evening.
____________________________________________________________________ Department inaugurates new Minor in Actuarial Science. As of fall 2008, WMU students have the option to declare a minor in actuarial science through the Department of Mathematics. Coursework for this exciting new program cuts across several departments, including mathematics, statistics, economics, and finance.
