by John Martino, Western Michigan University

Abstract: In 1887 King Oscar II of Sweden (and Norway)sponsored a mathematical competition to show that our solar system is stable. The French mathematician Henri Poincare tried and failed to solve the problem. He was awarded the prize in 1889. This talk is the story of Poincare's failure and its consequences.
