
The Department of Mathematics offers support to students in each of its graduate degree programs. Following is a description of the opportunities available to our graduate students.
These awards are for new full-time non-resident Masters level students, and provide $8,000 per year to cover the cost of tuition, books, fees, and other educational expenses. For full-time status, a Presidential Scholar must take a minimum of 6 credit hours (2 courses) per semester during the Fall and Spring semesters. Presidential Scholarships have no duties attached! For 2007-2008, the department has 3 Presidential Scholarships available. (Note: A Presidential Scholarship cannot be combined with an assistantship.)
This is a 9-month assistantship for students in one of our Masters Degree programs. It includes a stipend and 6 credit hours/semester of tuition remission for graduate courses. For 2006-2007, the stipend is $10,452. MAs are assigned 20 hours/week of duties in the department. Typical duties include tutoring, recitations, and teaching courses in mathematics.
This is a 9-month assistantship for students in one of our Doctoral Degree programs. It includes a stipend and up to 9 credit hours/semester of tuition remission for graduate courses. For 2006-2007, the stipend is $10,452. DMAs are assigned 20 hours/week of duties in the department. Typical duties include tutoring, recitations, and teaching courses in mathematics.
These are typically awarded to doctoral students in the final 1-2 years of their program. The associateship covers Fall and Spring semesters, in addition to one of the two summer semesters. It includes a stipend, and up to 9 credit hours/semester of tuition remission for the Fall and Spring semesters, and 3 credit hours of tuition for the summer semester. For 2006-2007, the total stipend over three semesters is $16,130. DAs are assigned 20 hours/week of duties in the department. Typical duties include tutoring, recitations, and teaching courses in mathematics.
About forty teaching assistantships and doctoral associateships are awarded each year to both new and continuing students. Application forms for teaching assistant positions may be obtained online and should be received by the department no later than February 15, 2008. Applications received after this date will be considered as long as openings remain.
