Psychology Subject Guide
Overview
The following is a guide to online as well as print resources accessible in Waldo or the Education Library. All linked sources in the following document can be found through the University Libraries' home pages at http://www.wmich.edu/library/. Before using the University Libraries' Web pages, all students and other first time users should access the ResearchPath library skills tutorial that is linked from the Help screen of the University Libraries' site. For further assistance, ask for help at the Central Reference Desk, or make an appointment with Laurel A. Grotzinger, Subject Liaison for Psychology, 387-5418, laurel.grotzinger@wmich.edu
Guides to the Field
A subject guide or gateway is a bibliography, usually annotated and arranged by kind or type of material (e.g., dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, directories, bibliographies, periodical indexes, journals, online catalogs, Web sites) of the field and its related areas. In the case of psychology, a guide often includes key sources in the social sciences such as education, sociology, political science, health sciences, and communication as well as reference and information sources specifically oriented to psychology. This Psychology guide is an abbreviated guide to psychology information resources that can be found in the University Libraries or, more importantly, accessed electronically by WMU students, faculty, and staff. At the present time, many of the best guides to psychology are found through online educational sites. The two print volumes noted here are largely useful for historical work rather than identifying contemporary research.
Library Research in Psychology "This information was created to help students and non-psychologists find relevant research on psychological topics. For detailed information on using the resources, simply click on the links for more information."A useful site from APA Online, the official site of the American Psychological Association.
Psychology: A Guide to Reference and Information Sources Z 7201 .B39 1993 (Ref)
Useful compilation of the reference literature available. Over 600 sources are arranged in four sections: general social science reference works, resources in the social science disciplines, general psychology reference works, and special topics in psychology (e.g., perception, intelligence, marriage and the family, disorders and their treatments, school psychology, etc.)
Research Guide for Psychology
Z 7201 .M35 (Ref)
Although a dozen years older (published in 1982) than the first source, this is still considered by scholars to be the major bibliographic guide to print materials for psychology and related disciplines. Some 1,200 works are discussed in lengthy bibliographic essays based on the 16 subject chapters (A-Q, e.g., "G: Developmental Psychology"; "M: Educational Psychology") of the printed Psychological Abstracts. Indexes first-named authors, titles, and "selected subjects." Needless to say, there are no Web sites included, but users can check the Journals listing to determine if an online source now exists for a given print title or journal.
Dictionaries
Dictionaries are among the most basic and useful reference sources that exist. They provide definitions to the words and phrases associated with a field and related disciplines. Some also include brief biographical sketches and useful tables and chronologies.APA Dictionary of Psychology BF31 .A65 2007 (Ref)
The essential work in the field that "encompasses all areas of research and application, and includes coverage across all the major subdisciplines of psychology." Heavily cross-referenced; for all levels of research.
Concise Dictionary of Psychology BF31 .S62 1998 (Ref)
Standard A-Z compilation of psychological terms for the novice. This 3rd edition has very succinct entries (averaging 20 to 50 words) except for an occasional term (e.g., abnormal; Freud, Sigmund) too complex to keep short. Cross references, a few illustrations--overall very introductory.
Dictionary of Behavioral Science BF 31 .D48 1989 (Ref)
The second and most recent edition contains more than 20,000 terms in psychology, psychiatry, neuroscience, social work, anthropology, human relations, education, statistics, and physiology. Straight alphabetical listing of articles prepared by specialists. Has good historical and biographical data as well as brief essays on key terms, e.g., Gestalt psychology. Excellent summaries of such things as the classification of mental disorders, but this example, as with other information is now out of date. Written for advanced students.

Dictionary of Theories, Laws, and Concepts in Psychology BF31 .R625 1998 (Ref)
An unusual "dictionary" that provides scholarly descriptions, alphabetically arranged, of the "observations, data, and phenomena" of psychology. Entries average 250 to 350 words (at least a page) and include significant references. Multiple cross references help to locate the alphabetical entry. Volume begins with the ABC Theory, moves through Conflict Theories to Loeb's Tropistic Theory to Zipf's Law. "Laws" in the behavioral and social sciences are more often defined as theories in other fields. This work includes tabular analysis of laws and another of theories that have been established in 112 years of psychological development. There is also a bibliography of the textbooks that were surveyed to develop the dictionary, and a subject index.
Oxford Companion to the Mind
BF31 .O94 2004 (Ref)
The print copy is a second edition; the electronic book is the 1987 first edition.

This A-Z arrangement does include numerous key words and aspects of psychology and philosophy from relations between mind and matter, free will, intentionality, normal/abnormal behavior, biological origins, the structure and function of the nervous systems to biographical entries on key individuals. Longer articles have very selective citations.
Encyclopedias
An introduction to the ideas, concepts, and general overview of a subject and its components is found in an encyclopedia. Often, definitions are included, but most encyclopedias have lengthy articles prepared by the best scholars/researchers in the profession, and cite the major books and articles published on the topic. Many also contain biographical portraits, contributions of the psychologist under study, and a variety of additional reference information. Cross-references and author, title, and subject indexes are almost always found in encyclopedias. There are a number of excellent print encyclopedias available for psychology and its related areas that are complemented by several online sources.Concise Corsini Encyclopedia of Psychology, 4th ed. Books/Monographs: Searching the Catalogs
Using Library Catalogs to Find Books on a Psychological Topic When looking for books (NOT magazine or journal articles) on a psychological topic, the search should begin with the University Libraries' online catalogs. The two main catalogs (the New Catalog and the Classic) are easily accessible from the search box on the Libraries' home page. Use the options on the drop down menus and special "limits" to search for titles, authors, call numbers, subjects, and more in selected formats or locations.
Many researchers prefer to begin with an Advanced Search that is available.
When a list of titles appears, review them and then select those that might contain relevant information.
Dissertations and theses are now available online from ProQuest. Click on the heading below or use the A-Z listing on the Libraries' home page under D. Scroll to Dissertations and Theses (ProQuest) and open the link to search by author, subject, institution, etc. Many of the more recent dissertations are available online or have a lengthy excerpt. Older dissertations may only have an abstract but can be ordered through Interlibrary Loan. WMU dissertations and theses can be located in print through the catalogs or searched online.
New Library Catalog
In 2009 we added a new interface to our catalog. It still identifies books (including online books), journal titles, government documents, music, videos, maps, and other items in the University Libraries. It can still be searched by title, author, subject, but now you can choose the format and location in your first search. There are easy ways of narrowing your search in the left column, it offers "did you mean" spelling, favorite lists, and lets you tag items with your own labels.
Classic Library Catalog
WMU's Classic online catalog (also known as WestCat), is used to identify books (including electronic books), government documents, journals, audio and video, slides, music scores, and other items in the University Libraries' collections. The catalog can be searched by title, author, subject heading, keyword, call number, and more.
Link directly to the Classic catalog (WestCat) on the Libraries' home page by selecting the Classic heading next to the search box.
When using the search box for catalogs, the default is the New Catalog.
Using WorldCat to Find Books on Psychology If you wish to search a comprehensive, multilibrary online catalog to identify books on your topic not found in our Libraries, WorldCat , found under "W" in the A-Z Database listing, is a compilation of over 62 million records, from "before 1000 B.C. to present," located in over 39,000 national and international libraries. Books in WorldCat or cited in other bibliographies that are not found in our Libraries can usually be obtained through interlibrary loan by linking to ILL through the catalog or index. Online interlibrary loan order forms for both books and journal articles are also available under InterLibrary Loan, found under Services. WorldCat contains many non-print resources including visual materials, sound recordings, maps, computer files, archival materials, music recordings and Internet resources. All Internet resources are directly linked to the Web site or full text .
Books in other libraries can also be searched by selecting the Books entry from the upper left-hand Research column of the Libraries' home page and then choosing a local, regional, or other library from the listing on the screen.
WorldCat Comprehensive catalog of books and other materials in libraries around the world. Contains millions of records in hundreds of languages. Nonbook materials include (among other publication formats) the titles of journals and magazines, manuscripts, maps, electronic resources, websites, computer programs, music scores, films, slides, sound recordings, conference proceedings, and videotapes. Items located through WorldCat must be requested through Interlibrary Loan unless they are also listed in the WMU Libraries catalog.
Bibliographies in Psychology When you have used a major subject heading to search the Classic catalog, e.g., Psychology, not only will this library have many titles that include a bibliography of related works, but there may also be a Library of Congress subject subdivision for Bibliography, which will retrieve compilations of books, articles, and other resources on various aspects of psychology. The official subject headings for psychology also cross many areas, and can be subdivisions of other headings. Use of the Library of Congress Subject Headings, a 5 volume set of official terms found at the Reference Desks is recommended, although the Advanced Search, a WestCat option, can be used to locate official headings. Use your own keywords to search, then when you find an appropriate book entry, check out the official subject headings listed for each book or other resource. The subject heading can then be linked to all of the resources that use that heading. The official printed set of LC subject headings also gives related terms, the terms that the official term is "used for," and phrases involving the headings.
A few of the common subject headings are noted below, but you need to use the Library of Congress volumes to note the wide range of possible headings and to select appropriate headings. For example, a common subject heading in psychology is Behavior Therapy. If you enter this, after changing the drop down menu in WestCat to a subject search, the response will be that Waldo Library owns nearly 400 books classified under the subject heading of Behavior Therapy. If you do not use an approved subject heading, e.g., industrial psychology, and search the same way, you will not find appropriate books under that heading in WestCat. There will be a see reference to Psychology, Industrial with an eventual list of several hundred books and other resources on industrial psychology.

Subdivisions of psychology, e.g., Bibliography, History, Computer simulation, Methodology, Study and teaching, are given, as well as other official subjects, e.g., Psychology, Applied; Psychology, Industrial; Psychology and literature, Psychology in literature, Psychology teachers.
Example 2: Broader Term: Behavior Modification (even Broader Term: Behavioralism (Psychology); Conditioned Response; Human Behavior; Psychology, Applied. Examples of narrower terms: Behavior therapy, Brainwashing, Habit breaking, Learning disabled youth--Behavior modification, Token economy (Psychology)
Biographical Sources
There are multiple sources in which you can locate biographical information about psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and other practitioners of psychology and its related areas. The encyclopedias and dictionaries noted above, with few exceptions, contain biographical data as do general encyclopedias and biographical sources. Use the Library Catalog to search for books on individual psychologists by subject, NOT author, e.g., search Skinner, B.F; James, William; Piaget, Jean, etc.A simple way to identify books that contain biographical material is to use the Basic Search screen in the Library Catalog. Type in "Psychologists, " change the right hand drop down menu to Subject Headings, and a screen comes up showing that there are at least 10 entries under that heading in Waldo. Following that listing are several subdivisions including "Psychologists Biography" that has 28 titles identified. Moreover, by searching with different but related occupations, e.g., Psychiatrists, additional biographical dictionaries and directories can be located. Of course, well-know mental health professionals, both living and dead, can be found in several general biographical sources. See Biographical Information in the Subject Guides listing. Some biographical information is also found in membership directories such as the American Psychological Association. A few examples of the entries found under the subject heading of "Psychologists Biography" are:
