Maps

The Map Room, located on the third floor of Waldo Library, contains over 185,000 thematic and topographic maps and atlases. The collection is international in scope and has excellent coverage for the United States and Europe. Most maps in the collection were published during the 20th Century.

The resources in the Map Room can help you find your way from Kalamazoo to the Big Apple or Appleby, Texas. Thematic maps can show you the distribution of peoples, languages, or nuclear reactors across the United States. Other maps can help you investigate the topographic or geologic features of a specific location.

Finding Maps
While the atlases in the collection appear in WESTCAT, the sheet maps do not. To find the maps, use the department's map card catalog. The catalog is organized according to American Geographical Society subject headings. The maps are arranged in the drawer by Library of Congress call numbers.
A main part of the map collection is large-scale topographic maps (1:24,000) for the entire United States. These maps give detailed topographic information helpful to environmental researchers, students, professional planners, and geographers. Index maps provided by the United State Geological Survey are used to locate specific maps. The collection also contains topographic maps covering most areas of the world.

Library staff is available in the Map Room most hours that the room is open. They can help you find the data you are interested in.

Map Room Hours The Map Room is open the following hours. NOTE: These hours are subject to change.

Atlases

It is hard to identify the most significant atlases because of the variety of both questions and the purposes of each atlas. Two of the most significant general world atlases are the following:

Macmillan World Atlas G1021 .M2382 1996 (Ref)

Times Atlas of the World G1021 .T55 1995 (Map)
