Jeremiah O'Sullivan Collection

Jeremiah O'Sullivan Collection

The O'Sullivan collection complements both the Obrecht and Cistercian Studies Collections as it focuses on medieval Cistercian history. The collection contains books on Irish and monastic history as well as canon law. Five of the books in our collection were written by O'Sullivan and donated for their research value.

Jeremiah O'Sullivan (1902-1974) was a Professor of History at Fordham University and wrote extensively on the history of the Cistercian Order. He left his personal library to the Institute of Cistercian Studies Library, which now forms part of Special Collections. The collection also contains a compilation on his life and works written by his wife Claire after his death in 1974. A number of the books in this donation feature the O'Sullivan's private bookplate. A large, framed photograph of both O'Sullivan's is on permanent display in the Special Collection Reading Room on the third floor of Waldo Library.
