Carter Burden Archibald MacLeish Collection
The Archibald MacLeish Collection, purchased in 2003, formed a part of the
20 th century literature collection of Carter Burden, one of the great modern
book collectors.
Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982) was a poet, a playwright, and served as the
head of the Library of Congress (1939-1944). He won the Pulitzer Prize three
times: in 1932 for Conquistadore , 1952 for Collected Poems ,
and 1958 for J.B . He also won the National Book Award in 1952 for Collected
Poems , was awarded the Bollingen Prize in 1958 for J.B , and won
an Academy Award in 1965 for his work on The Eleanor Roosevelt Story.
The
collection contains many signed first edition books, limited editions, broadsides,
miniature books, and publisher's proofs of his poems, addresses, and plays written
by Archibald MacLeish.
