Based on U.S. census data from 1790 through 1860, this book presents useful percentage information about African Americans, both slaves and freed blacks. The tables and graphs show how the percentage of blacks in each region and state have changed over time. They also provide the raw numbers of free blacks and slaves, and the total population, by region and state. There are narrative sections in the book addressing such issues as emancipation, manumission, internal immigration restrictions and international black migration.
