For journal articles, reports, and other types of material you will need to use other indexes and databases. Selecting the appropriate index or database is an important step in locating the information you need. The two databases that offer the best starting points are Applied Science and Technology Abstracts and EI Compendex. There are a number of additional databases that you may want to use that cover a variety of aspects of aviation. A number of these are listed and described below.
Applied Science and Technology Abstracts Basic undergraduate engineering database. It covers only English-language journals, no conferences. WMU libraries own about 60% of the titles indexed. Good first choice for engineering/technology. Coverage: 1983-present. Tutorial
Ei Compendex The most comprehensive index for scholarly research in engineering and applied science. Includes conference papers and foreign language material. Coverage 1969-present, updated weekly.

INSPEC Indexes scientific and technical journals in physics, electrical engineering, electronics, communications, control engineering, computers and computing, and information technology. Coverage: 1969-present. Updated weekly.
Ergonomics Abstracts Online Index with abstracts of over 400 journals and other publications in all aspects of ergonomics and human factor engineering. Coverage: 1985-present. Updated 4 times a year.
Metadex A comprehensive index to information on metals and alloys: their properties, manufacturing, applications, and development. Includes over 2,000 journals, plus patents, dissertations, government reports, conference proceedings, books and web sites. This database contains over1 million records and is the online equivalent of Metals Abstracts, Metals Abstracts Index, and Alloys Index. Coverage from 1966 to present. Updated monthly.
Science Direct Database for scientific research that contains the citations and abstracts of more than 1,800 Elsevier journals in the life, physical, medical, technical, and social sciences as well as selected full text articles. Science Direct can be searched as a database or browsed by individual title. Coverage varies.
InfoTrac General Reference Center Gold An index of general interest articles from magazines, newspapers, and reference books on all subjects. Many entries provide full-text and images. Coverage: 1980-present.
LexisNexis Academic Indexes thousands of domestic and foreign newspapers, as well as journals, and other publications in News, Business company reports and articles, Legal Research, Medical and Reference. The legal research category includes law reviews, law news, federal and state laws and cases. Mostly full text. Coverage dates vary.
General Business File ASAP An index of business publications that includes trade publications, newspapers, journals, broker research reports, and company profiles, some articles with full text and images. Coverage 1980 - present.
Health and Wellness Resource Center An index to articles as well as information from a variety of reference sources. Includes links to medical encyclopedias, a dictionary, drug and herb finder, health organization directory, and some newspapers. Coverage 1980-present. Updated daily.
PAIS International (Public Affairs Information Service) Indexes articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, research reports, statistical directories, and more about public affairs worldwide. Coverage is from the 1972 and is updated monthly.
PAIS Archive This archive contains records, originally published in the Public Affairs Information Service Bulletin, from 1915 to 1976 about public affairs worldwide.

Web of Science Web of Science from the ISI Web of Knowledge contains three major databases covering all areas of knowledge: Science Citation Index Expanded (1900-present), Social Sciences Citation Index (1956-present), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1975-present). The literature can be searched by subject, author, journal title, and author's address. Cited Ref. Search allows users to search for articles that cite a particular author or work.
