These indexes to journal articles are listed in approximate priority order. Their titles suggest the subjects they cover. Students may need to use more than one of these indexes to search for pertinent articles. In some cases the indexes not only cite articles we own in print but also in electronic full-text. In other cases, however, we won't own the journal at all and you will need to request a copy of the article you want through Interlibrary Loan.


ATLA Religion restricted Index to thousands of citations to journals and edited books as well as book reviews in the field of religious studies. Coverage from 1949 to the present, with selected records back to 1818. Updated twice a year.

Arts & Humanities Citation Index restricted (Web of Science) The Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database that indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, and selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. Coverage is from 1975 to the present.

Librarian's Comment: Helpful because much research in religion is cross-disciplinary or multi-disciplinary.

ECO (Electronic Collections Online) restricted Full-text journals in a variety of subjects presented predominantly in PDF format, including images. Searchable as a whole collection or just those titles owned by WMU Libraries. Coverage from 1995, updated daily.

Humanities Abstracts restricted Indexes more than 465 major humanities journals in art, history, literature, philosophy, religion, music, and related areas. Coverage from 1984, abstracts from 1994 to the present.

Humanities Index.
AI 3 .R492x (Ref) 1974- present.(From 1907 to 1965 this was called International Index and from 1965 to 1974 it was called Social Sciences and Humanities Index.) This source indexes older journals not in our more recent electronic indexes.

Philosopher's Index restricted Z 7127 .P47x (Ref)
Indexes and abstracts journal articles, books, and other publications on philosophy covering ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political philosophy, epistemology, metaphysics, and logic as well as the philosophy of law, religion, science, history, education, and language. Coverage: 1940-date. Updated quarterly.

Dissertations and Theses (ProQuest) restricted Indexes virtually all doctoral dissertations and many masters theses produced in the U.S. since 1860 and many from foreign schools as well. Abstracts available from 1980. Full text for most dissertations available from 1997. Some authors choose to not make their dissertations available. Print and microfilm copies are offered for a fee, but check out Interlibrary Loan before paying for a copy.

Readers' Guide Retrospective restricted Indexes the most popular general-interest periodicals published in the United States from 1890 to 1982. Some of these periodicals published short stories and book reviews.

Nineteenth-Century Masterfile restricted An index to over 8 million articles from popular and scholarly journals published between 1802 and 1906. Based on Poole's Index to Periodical Literature, the Masterfile adds periodicals, books, newspapers, U.S. and U.K. government documents, and U.S. patents not found in the old print index.

Anthropology Bibliography on Disc

This compact disc indexes books and other non-journal resources held by the Tozzer Library/Peabody Museum at Harvard University. Subjects include prehistoric archaeology, ethnology and physical anthropology. Coverage is from 1866-1997. For 1997 to the present search Harvard's catalog.
