A subject guide or gateway is a bibliography, usually annotated and arranged by type of materials such as guides, encyclopedias, dictionaries, periodical indexes, biographical sources, Web sites, or other kinds of resources. This Philosophy guide is an abbreviated guide to philosophy information resources that can be found in the University Libraries or accessed electronically by WMU students, faculty, and staff. The first three guides to the field are print classics, and users may wish to jump to the section on Additional Online Resources for significant online guides to the literature.

Most comprehensive and best-annotated compilation of the reference literature available. Arranged by types of works (e.g., dictionaries, bibliographies, electronic resources) with author, title, and subject indexes. Note that recent electronic databases are not included.

The Philosopher's Guide to Sources, Research Tools, Professional Life, and Related Fields
Z 7125 .D44 1980 (Ref)
For the professional philosopher and advanced student, this reputable source is somewhat dated and only selectively annotated. About 50% of the volume is a comprehensive reference bibliography (e.g., indexes, dictionaries, histories) followed by a section on journals and professional aids. The last section includes related research sources that fall outside the field of philosophy.

Research Guide to Philosophy

Selective list of key reference works published before 1982 plus a 500 page bibliographical survey of books and monographic literature. Limited annotations. Emphasis is on the late 19th century. As a result, many 20th century developments are not included.
