You must use a periodical index (not WestCat) to find articles. The primary indexes to music periodicals are listed below. For information about other databases with articles related to music, see the guide Music Research Tips.

HOW TO LOCATE PERIODICALS: Do a journal title search in WestCat using the title of the periodical. If the library does not have the periodical, you may be able to get the article through interlibrary loan.

International Index to Music Periodicals Full Text restricted Indexes and abstracts articles from more than 430 music periodicals from 20+ countries, with full text coverage of 125 journals. Articles cover the full spectrum of subjects, popular to scholarly, and all aspects of music, including music education, performance, ethnomusicology, musical theater, theory, popular music forms, and composition. 30 journals are indexed in their entirety from their first issue, some as early as 1874.

Music Index Online restricted A comprehensive index covering more than 800 US and international music periodicals. Includes articles, book reviews, dissertations, and obituaries. Links to full-text journals in JSTOR. Coverage from 1975.

Librarian's Comment: First, use the subject heading list to see if your topic is used in the index. If it is not, look for more general or related terms that are used. There are headings for countries, regions, national and ethnic groups, types of music, names of instruments, and combinations of these.
