General Bibliographic and Historiographical Orientations
The works which follow in this listing fall into the character of "guides to the student of medieval history." They discuss both the development of medieval history as a field of study, and provide a more or less general introduction to the primary sources and secondary literature.

A revised, expanded translation by Giselle De Nie of an earlier edition which appeared in German (see next entry). It consists of five main sections: 1. Typology of the sources of medieval history; 2. Libraries and archives (with extensive collections of medieval manuscripts); 3. Great collections and repertories of sources; 4. Reference works for the study of medieval texts; and 5. Bibliographical introduction to the auxiliary sciences of history.
