In case law, a citator is used to find the most recent cases dealing with, or citing an earlier case. Thus, a citator would list under Roe v. Wade (1973) all the ensuing cases that cited Roe v. Wade. This provides an historical basis, i.e., precedent, for intervening rulings as well as building a legal framework for related and current cases.
Shepard's Law Review Citations KF 105.2 .S44 4th 1986 (Ref) "Shepardizing" is the term for doing a citation search of a case, i.e., who, since the case was adjudicated has cited it as a precedent. At the present time, Waldo Library does not have the online source that shepardizes, but does have the print edition, which is kept up to date with cumulative supplements.
