This section is the primary place to search for literary criticism which does not appear in books. These sources list primarily journal articles (some of these index essays in books and one indexes dissertations) and are listed in approximate priority order, with the most frequently used indexes first. Their titles suggest the subjects they cover. Students may need to use more than one of these indexes to search for pertinent articles.

Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature A sometimes useful additional bibliography to search besides the MLA Bibliography for scholarship about English language and literature, but use the MLA first. Searching works best if you know the author's name and search by it rather than by subject matter. However, this resource also indexes research by broad subject, by chronological period, and by scholars' names. Print: Z 2011 .M69 (1920-date)
Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science) The Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database that indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, and selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. Coverage is from 1975 to the present.
Dictionary of Literary Biography PS221.D5 (Ref) 1978-present Now available online, the print consists of hundreds of volumes, each covering a distinct literary period, genre, or theme, with extensive essays, frequently illustrated with images of the author and his/her works, which link biography with interpretations of the literary work. Included are literary authors, journalists, historians, screenwriters, scholars, critics, and publishers. Though international is scope, emphasis is on those authors writing in English. Some authors appear in more than one volume. Use the online index or the index in the latest published volume to find all the previous volumes.
Excerpts from Literary Criticism Each of these sets of books carefully excerpts key passages of literary criticism published in books, journals, magazines, and other sources. The Libraries may own the original publication from which the excerpt is selected and which you may want to consult. Use the most recent volume as an index to the whole set to locate the volume or volumes that may have commentary on the author or work of interest.
