Book reviews often differ from literary criticism. Book reviews usually are published within a few months, or seldom more than a year after the book is published. Literary criticism, on the other hand, may be published many years, or even centuries after a literary work is published, if the critic thinks the work is worth interpreting.
Book reviews are published in newspapers, general interest magazines, and over the Internet, as well as in scholarly journals. Book reviews of fiction, for instance, which are published in general interest sources, cannot be expected to have the complexity or length of much of the more considered literary criticism published in journals or books. But book reviews may be the only place for interpretations of recent fiction or of works neglected by scholars and literary critics.

Book Review Index Provides reviews of general interest and some scholarly books published in the US since 1965. This doesn't have the excerpts from reviews that Book Review Digest provides, nor does it go back to 1905, but it does index many more periodicals.
