10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children's Books for Racism and SexismPrepared by the Council on Interracial Books for Children, this site offers ten things to look for when choosing non-racist and non-sexist books for children, including illustrations, story lines, lifestyles, vocabulary, and relationships between characters.

American Association of School Librarians (AASL)This is the Web site for AASL, a division of the American Library Association for school librarians and school library media specialists.

Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC)Supporting children's librarianship, this division of the American Library Association will aid school and public librarians who work with children.

ATN - Book Lists (Suggested Reading)
This site, maintained by a librarian, provides a number of useful lists of children's books in the following categories: awards, genres, read alikes, values, authors, professional reading, read-alouds, school subjects, themes, and more. Especially useful is the "read alikes" section--e.g., "If you liked Maniac McGee..." or "If you liked Ella Enchanted..." you can quickly find similar books for your reader.


Carol Hurst's Children's Literature SiteThis is a collection of reviews of good books for kids, ideas of ways to use them in the classroom and collections of books and activities about particular subjects, curriculum areas, themes and professional topics.

Children's Book CouncilFeatures the Children's Book Council, Inc., which is dedicated to quality children's books and childhood literacy.

Children's Literature Assembly (CLA)
Affiliated with the National Council of Teachers of English, the CLA promotes children's literature and its teaching; the site includes the CLA's annual list of notable children's trade books in the language arts.

Children's Literature Association (ChLA)
This organization encourages serious scholarship and research in children's literature, and enhances the professional stature of the graduate and undergraduate teaching of children's literature. There are links to many Web sites dealing with children's literature, including YA literature, information about authors and illustrators, folklore and mythology, children's book awards, and much more.

Children's Literature Web GuideLists Internet resources related to books for children and young adults. Offers access to stories, author profiles, book reviews, bestseller lists, book award information, research guides, indexes, resources for teachers, librarians, and parents, and lists of recommended books.

Children's Picture Book DatabaseSponsored by Miami University of Ohio, this site gives teachers, librarians, parents and students a searchable database of picture books for designing literature-based thematic units for all disciplines; contains abstracts of over 5,000 picture books for children in preschool through grade three.

Children's Writing Resource CenterA Web gathering place for children's writers and illustrators-whether already published or aspiring. Includes links to children's bestsellers.

De Grummond Children's Literature CollectionHoused at the McCain Library at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, this is one of the leading research centers in the field of children's literature. The collection has original manuscripts and illustrations by more than 1,200 authors and illustrators, and more than 70,000 children's books published since 1530.

International Children's Digital LibraryHosted by the University of Maryland, this is a five-year project to create a free, full-text, and searchable collection of approximately 10,000 children's books in over 100 languages.


ISLMC Children's Literature & Language Arts ResourcesOffered by the Internet School Library Media Center (ISLMC) at James Madison University, this site focuses on children's literature in education, including links to book awards; book and media reviews; authors and illustrator pages; genres of the literature; and bibliotherapy.

Kay E. Vandergrift's Special Interest PageThis site is a means of sharing ideas and information with all those interested in literature for children and young adults; includes a history of children's and young adult literature, gender issues, feminist studies, integrating literature into the classroom, and extensive links to author and illustrator pages.

National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance (NCBLA)
The National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance is a non-profit organization founded by authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults. The main goal of the NCBLA is to make issues related to young people’s literacy, literature, and libraries an ongoing priority on the national agenda.

National Council for the Social StudiesSince 1921, the NCSS has provided leadership, service and support for all social studies educators. Be sure to look at the annual Notable Social Studies Books for Young People produced since 1972 for children in grades K-8. The books selected emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, and are easily readable and of high literary quality.

Native American BooksA Web site produced and written by Native Americans that reviews and recommends children's books about Native Americans.

Rutgers University Council on Children's LiteratureThe School of Library and Information Science at Rutgers University hosts an especially fine site for information about children's literature. Of special interest is the section that contains links to writer and illustrator resources.

Small Presses Owned and Operated by People of Color: Publishers of Children's BooksCompiled by the Cooperative Children's Book Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, this site lists the names, addresses, and email addresses of smaller African American, Native American, Asian American, and Latino presses that publish children's books.

Social History of Children's LiteratureDeveloped at Rutgers University, this site offers a useful overview of the history of children's literature and links to extensive bibliographies and other resources.

Society of Children's Book Writers and IllustratorsA professional organization dedicated to serving the people who write, illustrate, or share a vital interest in children's literature.
