United States Census

Census 2000: Census 2000 results are available and the US population as of April 1, 2000 was 281,421,906.

Census 2000 Redistricting Data: (Public Law 94-171) for Michigan cities, counties, and places is now available. More extensive information, including racial information and population information down to the tract level is available on CD-ROM in the Government Documents area. The following two map sites are needed in order to get at the data available for the smaller geographical areas. Please ask the staff for assistance.

Block and Tract maps for 2000 are also available in Waldo Library's Documents Department on DVD. The DVDs are easier to use than the Web versions. The Call numbers are:

Michigan Information Center: For Census 2000 data click on the "Census 2000" yellow checkmark icon. Then click on the "Census 2000 data releases" icon. A list of available files will appear. Data appears as Crystal Reports and PDF files. Frequently there is a downloadable Excel file.

The Northwest Michigan Council of Governments has prepared a series of reports for each county in Michigan. Each report provides data for the county and for the minor civil divisions in the county (townships, cities and villages).

ERsys - Earth Resource System: A commercial data supplier that provides a lot of free information at the city level.

United States Historical Census Data Browser: A service of the University of Virginia, Geospatial and Statistical Data Center. Compiled from data available from the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, this site provides demographic and economic data from all censuses from 1790 - to 1970. While not designed for downloading large tables this site does allow for the retrieval of simple facts and figures.

United States Bureau of the Census: For Census 2000 results, click on the red Census 2000 banner or click on American Factfinder in the left-hand column.

State Data Center Program: Many states have agencies that process and provide census data. In Michigan the agency that fills that role is the Michigan Information Center. Other states have similar agencies. This site is a directory of those agencies. Use it if you are looking for census information for a particular state other than Michigan. You might find better access than through the Bureau of the Census.

The Center for Urban Studies at Wayne State University has produced a series of county profiles from 2000 census information. These reports provide information down to Minor Civil Division (MCD) or township and village and city. Click on "Publication" in the left hand column of the home page, then click on "Data Publications" on the next page. You will have to scroll down to get to the 2000 census reports.

For the genealogist the library subscribes to Ancestry Plus which Includes digitized images of the US Federal Census from 1790 forward, the American Genealogical Biographical Index, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, and much more. Census Finder is a free directory of over 17,000 Web sites with census information.

Summary File 1 information (100% data) for all Michigan school districts has been made available by the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments
