Government Information on CD-ROM
The U.S. government publishes some of its information on CD-ROMs. This includes
scientific reports, statistical data, US Geological Survey material, NOAA Weather
Charts, National Trade Data Bank, US Exports and Imports of Merchandise, and
much more.
CD-ROMs are located in the Documents Department
and are are available from the staff. There are two workstations close to the
office that are set up for CD-ROM use.
The following CD-ROMs have been set up on computers in the Documents area
for use by all library patrons. Some may require additional CD's, which you can
get from the staff.
CD-ROM Collection
Census of Population and Housing. This multiple CD set contains
the census data from 1980, 1990 and 2000. Currently only the redistricting information
is available for 2000. The Public
Law 94-171Redistricting Data for Michigan cities, counties, and places is
also available online. For more extensive information, including racial information
and population information down to the tract level, the CD-ROM must be used.
The following two map sites are needed in order to get at the data available
for the smaller geographical areas: Census
Tract Maps for 2000 and Voting
District Maps for 2000. Please ask the staff for assistance.
County Business Patterns. Provides statistics and industry
detail (four-digit SIC codes) for US industries. Data shows number of establishments,
employment size, and payroll, and are used in measuring business activity within
states or counties.
County/City Data Book. Provides demographic, economic, and
government data from both the Federal government and private agencies. Tables
include data on current estimates, population and housing census, and economic
censuses.
Economic Census Data. The economic census, conducted every
five years, profiles most sectors of the economy. The latest census was for 1997.
Geographic areas are: US, states, counties, cities, and ZIP code areas.
Marcive GPO Cat/Pac Index. Index of Federal documents from
1976 forward. Also available online as a FirstSearch database GPO
Monthly Catalog.
Regional Economic Information System (REIS). Local area economic
data for 3,107 counties and 337 metropolitan areas for 1969-1997. Statistics
include: personal income by source; per capita personal income; earnings by 2-digit
SIC industry; full and part-time employment by industry; and regional economic
profiles.
USAPAT - US Patents. Facsimile images of US patents are available
from 1996 to the present.
