Making of America (Cornell University) Making of America (University of Michigan) A digital library of primary sources in American social history from the ante-bellum period through Reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. Includes over 4 million page images, representing close to 13,000 volumes of primary source materials, including books and periodicals. Cornell University has focused on the major journal literature of the period. The University of Michigan has focused on monographs. The Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade a Database on CD-ROM. CD-ROM HT 1 (Permanent Reserve). Contains records of 27,233 trans-Atlantic slave ship voyages made between 1595 and 1866. Format allows users to track information by time period and geographic region, and includes interactive maps that allow viewers to chart the trans-Atlantic connections. The accompanying data contains materials about people on board, owners and captains, ships' characteristics, and the geographic trajectory of each voyage. Web of Science Web of Science from the ISI Web of Knowledge contains three major databases covering all areas of knowledge: Science Citation Index Expanded (1900-present), Social Sciences Citation Index (1956-present), and Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1975-present). The literature can be searched by subject, author, journal title, and author's address. Cited Ref. Search allows users to search for articles that cite a particular author or work. Please LOGOFF when finished, so others may use the database. Tutorial Book Review Digest Indexes and excerpts reviews of English-language fiction and nonfiction books published in leading periodicals. The office of Architectural History and Preservation at the Smithsonian Institution and the National Zoo offer this detailed , year-by year outline of the history of slavery. Modern History Sourcebook: Life of Gustavus Vassa Features excerpts from an autobiography entitled Life of Gustavus Vassa, written by the former slave Olaudah Equino (1745-1797) after he was freed and living in England . Discusses Equiano's capture and transportation in Africa and describes the abuse of slaves in the West Indies. African Cities Sue Spencer presents a lesson focusing on the role of cities as administrative and cultural centers of the empires of Africa, intended for use with honors high school world history classes. This lesson is part of a unit on the world during the 15th century. The Department of Academic Programs, Division of Enriched and Innovative Instruction within the Montgomery County Public Schools in Rockville, Maryland, Provides the procedures for the lesson online. National Council for the Social Studies: Lesson Plans from Social Education The National Council for the Social studies(NCSS) presents a collection of social studies lessons from past issues of the NCSS journal entitled "Social Education." the lessons are in PDF format and are best suited for use with middle and high school classes .Lesson topics include democracy in South Africa, the Great depression and the New Deal, the Holocaust, Kurdish nationalism, and more. Odessey_Online Odyssey Online is an interactive activity for elementary and middle school students. The students explore the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, as well as sub-Saharan Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries, by examining images of museum objects .This activity was developed by the Micheal C. Senegal Activities for Grades 6-9: The Desertification Debate The Peace Corps presents a lesson plan for students in grades six through nine on desertification.
