Finding a book in the Libraries

Finding a book in the library includes using the library catalog and floor maps and learning about the library's call number system (a series of numbers and letters used to locate items on the library shelf).

Author, Title, or Journal Title search

When searching by author, always enter author's last name first. When searching by title, always drop the articles "a","an", or "the" at the beginning (and ONLY at the beginning) of a title. Basic Search »

Topic or Subject search

Keyword searching offers maximum flexibility. For example, you can combine author, title, and subject searches. Check drop-down menus for full lists of options.

Be sure the drop-down menu category to the right of the keywords you are entering matches the type of keyword search you wish to conduct. For example, if you enter an author's name, be sure to use the drop-down menu to select the "author name " search option.

Boolean connectors ("and", "or", "not") can be used to broaden or narrow your search. The default for Guided Keyword is "and". By connecting terms with "and" you can narrow and focus your search. Use the drop-down menu to change the default to "or" if you are not finding enough material and want to broaden your search. Select "not" to exclude a topic. Advanced Search »

Finding books on the shelves

Image displaying the Call Number, Status, and Location fields in the library catalog

Location, Call Number, Status: Location tells you what library, Call Number tells you where it is in that library, and Status tells you if its available.

To locate books on the shelves, be sure to note Location, Call Number, and Status (whether or not a book is checked out).

The Library Catalog searches for books in Waldo Library (the main library), the Archives and Regional History Collections (on East Campus), the Education Library, Visual Resources Library and Videotape Collection in Sangren Hall, and the Music and Dance Library in the Dalton Center.

You may restrict your search to a specific library (e.g., the Education Library) by using the "Simple Limits" or "More Limits" features. The limits feature remains activated until you click on the "Clear Limits" button. You can tell if the limits feature is activated by looking for the "Search limits are in effect!" message near the top of the search screen.
