Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where are you located?

We are located at the University Center at Lansing Community College.  Our address is
Western Michigan University-Lansing
Lansing Community College University Center
MC 8200
210 West Shiawassee
P.O. Box 40010
Lansing, MI  48901-7210

What are your hours?

Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What programs do you offer at WMU-Lansing?

WMU-Lansing offers several different degrees in undergraduate and graduate curriculums. Please view the Programs section of our site.

I am interested in one of your programs. Can I speak to an advisor?

Each program at WMU-Lansing has an assigned advisor that regularly meets with students here in our offices. These meetings are available by appointment and can be scheduled by calling our office for available dates and times. In cases where in-person meetings cannot be arranged, a telephone conference is usually a possibility.

When is the computer lab available?

The computer lab in the University Center is open for use from:

Monday - Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Saturday 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Students who are currently enrolled at WMU-Lansing can also use the computer lab across the street in room 100 of the TLC building on LCC's main campus from Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 12 midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.  In addition, these students can also use the labs at LCC East, Livingston County Center at Parker Campus, and St. Johns Clinton County Center.

What is the procedure for closing WMU-Lansing due to inclement weather?

Course cancellations due to inclement weather are rare and will be made by 2 p.m. each day. If Lansing Community College closes due to inclement weather, we also must close our regional site for the day. Also, if the main campus in Kalamazoo is closed, then we are also closed. However, occasionally the weather in Lansing will necessitate a weather closure. For weekday classes, the closure notice will be posted on our web site at www.wmich.edu/lansing and a message will be placed on our voicemail system. We may also send an email notice to those students who have given us their information in advance. For weekend courses, a notice will be placed on the voicemail system 2 hours prior to the start of the class. Obviously, students should use their best judgment about whether conditions are safe for them to travel, regardless of the official campus decision.

If can’t make it to class, how do I let my instructor know?

Your instructor will usually provide you with a means of contacting him or her, either by telephone or voicemail. If you do not have access to that information or cannot reach him or her, you may leave a message for the instructor at our office, and we will deliver that message at the earliest opportunity.

Where do I buy my books?

All textbooks for WMU-Lansing courses are available at Gibson’s Bookstore, located at 316 North Capitol Avenue in downtown Lansing (near Lansing Community College). You will need to tell them that you're a WMU student, as our texts are housed in a different section of the store. Barring supply problems, texts are generally available 1-2 weeks prior to the start of class. In addition, a copy of the book list is available online and in our office.

What partnerships does WMU-Lansing have?

WMU and C.A.H.E.N.
WMU-Lansing is a proud member of the Capital Area Higher Education Network. This organization works to promote adult education within the greater Lansing area and meets regularly to discuss issues pertinent to the higher education community. To qualify for membership, a school must have a physical presence in the Lansing area and be willing to participate in C.A.H.E.N. events and monthly meetings.

C.A.H.E.N. can organize education fairs for businesses and organizations at no charge. These fairs include representatives from each of our member schools who can provide materials and information to prospective students about the academic programs available. If your organization or business is having an event and would like to include an education fair or C.A.H.E.N. booth, you can contact the WMU-Lansing representative Adam Scheidt at (517) 483-9748 or by email at adam.scheidt@wmich.edu.

WMU and Thomas M. Cooley Law School
Recognizing the close association between the law and public administration, Western Michigan University and Thomas M. Cooley Law School have formed a partnership to offer the Joint Juris Doctor (J.D.)/Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree.  This program permits students to acquire the knowledge of both disciplines and expedite completion of the requirements for both the MPA degree and the JD degree by allowing participating students to transfer six semester hours of credit from one degree program to the other, resulting in a total course reduction of twelve semester hours when both degrees are completed.

WMU and Lansing Community College
The undergraduate degree in Manufacturing Engineering, offered at WMU-Lansing, is completed in cooperation with Lansing Community College (LCC).  Aiming to serve the needs of area residents, WMU and LCC work together to provide ‘2 + 2 transfer Program’.  These programs allow students to take their first two years of the program at LCC and finish the last two years at the WMU-Lansing. More information on LCC can be found at: www.lcc.edu/.
