RUSS 1000 Basic Russian I- 4 hrs.
Fundamentals of Russian with emphasis on oral proficiency. Meets the proficiency requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences Liberal Education curriculum for all majors.

RUSS 1010 Basic Russian II - 4 hrs.
Continuation of RUSS 1000. Prerequisite: RUSS 1000 or equivalent. Meets the proficiency requirement of the College of Arts and Sciences Liberal Education curriculum for all majors.

RUSS 2000 Intermediate Russian I - 4 hrs.
Level two Russian. Review and furthering of oral and reading skills based upon increasingly advanced oral and written exercises. Prerequisite: RUSS 1010 or equivalent. Some majors may require two years of foreign language study.

RUSS 2010 Intermediate Russian II - 4 hrs.
Continuation of RUSS 2000 with a focus on development of spoken and written expression in the Russian language through readings and discussion of civilization and cultural materials. Prerequisite: RUSS 2000 or equivalent. Some majors may require two years of foreign language study.

RUSS 3100 Russian Civilization - 3 hrs.
A study of selected aspects of Russian life and culture and their historical settings. Course taught in English and open to all students. Meets WMU's General Education requirements.

RUSS 3160 Russian Composition - 4 hrs.
Emphasis on increasing the student's command of written Russian. Prerequisite: RUSS 2010 or equivalent.

RUSS 3170 Russian Conversation - 4 hrs.
The course includes exercises to develop ease and accuracy in the use of everyday Russian. Emphasis on oral aspects of the language. Prerequisite: RUSS 2010 or equivalent.

RUSS 4520 Advanced Russian Composition - 4 hrs.

Intensive practice in composition and stylistics directed
towards appreciation of literary and other written expression
in Russian with work in free composition at an advanced level. Prerequisites:  RUSS 3160, 3170, or permission of instructor.

RUSS 4530 Advanced Russian Conversation - 4 hrs.

Intensive training in listening and communicating in Russian.
Emphasis will be on authentic situations in order to achieve
overall proficiency in the target language. Prerequisites:  RUSS 3160, 3170 or permission of instructor

RUSS 3250 Introduction to the Study of Russian Literature - 4 hrs.
Study of selected topics in Russian literature. Topics vary according to genre, author, or period and will be announced. May be repeated for credit. Course taught in Russian. Prerequisite: RUSS 2010 or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

LANG 3530 Russian Myths and Tales - 3 hrs.
This course introduces the student to a wide selection of Russian myths and tales, and examines the aesthetic, social and psychological values that they reflect. Students will gain an understanding of the cultural influence tales have in literature, music and ballet, in painting and in film. Course meets WMU's General Education requirement and is taught in English.

LANG 3750 Russian Literature in English Translation - 3 hrs. A survey of the development of great Russian prose in its historical and cultural context. The course will include but not be restricted to works by Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevski, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Pasternak, Bunin, Solzhenitsyn, and Tolstaya. Topics in this course vary from "Dostoevsky and the Existentialists," to "Tolstoy: The Writer, The Philosopher," to "Russian Short Fiction." This course fulfills the University baccalaureate-level writing requirement for foreign language majors and also meets the Area II General Education requirement.

RUSS 3440 Summer Study in Russia - 4 hrs.
A summer study abroad program of Russian language, literature, and culture. The course includes a series of lectures and discussions prior to departure. The tour will be accompanied by full explanations of all areas visited. Students plan and outline a project which they complete and submit after their return. Specific language tasks are assigned during the program. In addition, each student submits a term paper and takes an examination at the end of the study program. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Instructor's permission.

RUSS 4770 Foreign Study 1-16 hrs. Fall or Winter; 1-8 hrs.
Spring, Summer and Fall participation in departmentally approved program of study abroad.  Repeatable for credit up to 31 credit hours.  Prerequisite:  Prior permission of Russian advisor and chairperson.

RUSS 5030 Russian-English Translation Practicum The course is offered as part of WMU's Summer Translation Institute - see details under STI webpages

RUSS 5500 Independent Study 1-3 hrs. Directed individual study of a specific topic in Russian language, literature, or culture. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisites: Completion of four courses in Russian, or equivalent; minimum grade point average of 3.0 in Russian; department and instructor approval required.
