Annual Scholarships, Awards and Special Recognition
For current Western Michigan University students



Scholarships and awards requiring application:
(Applications are available in the Department Office, 410 Sprau Tower)

The Department Travel/Study Abroad Award. Number and amount of awards to be determined (minimum $500), to encourage students to further develop their language skills and broaden their understanding of other cultures. The awards may be used for travel/study abroad during any part of the summer or academic year. Deadline: February 15.

President's Scholarship for Study Abroad. 8 scholarships of $1,000 each. To be used by a French or German major or by a Chinese, Classics, Japanese or Russian minor for study abroad for a minimum of one semester in a University-approved program. Deadlines: October 15; February 15.

President's Award for Study Abroad. One award of $1,250 given in the Fall Semester. To be used by a French or German major or by a Chinese, Classics, Japanese or Russian minor to study at a foreign university, or in a study abroad program sponsored by an American university, for a minimum of one semester. Deadline: October 15.

Sue C. Mardis Scholarship for Women. One $2,500 award for study in a French-speaking country, in memory of the late Sue C. Mardis, teacher and advocate of the study of foreign languages. Applicants must have a declared major in French. Study needs to begin within one year of award and must be for at least one full semester.

Tamin Loan Fund: Loans of up to $500 for student of French, in honor of professor emerita Marion Tamin.

(Recipients are selected by faculty on the basis of academic excellence and dedication to foreign language study)

Mathilde Steckelberg Scholarship : Total of 3: one in Classics, French and German, approximately $600 each.
Victor Coutant Award in Classics : $100
Eunice E. Kraft Award for Excellence in Latin : $100
Praemium Octavianum in Classics : $100
Margaret H. Brooks Award for Study in France : $100
Herman E. Rothfuss Award for Excellence in German : $1000
