French Major or Minor

Within the curriculum of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University, the Department of Foreign Languages offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Arts major and minor in French. Similarly, a French major and minor are available in an Education curriculum. Requirements vary somewhat from one WMU Undergraduate Catalog to the next.

Students who have chosen to major in French must also satisfy WMU's Baccalaureate Writing requirement by successfully completing LANG 3750 or 3760-Foreign Literature in English Translation, which does not apply toward the hours required for a majoror minor. Students who have more than one major may fulfill this writing requirement in another major.

Please note that majors in French must take at least four courses (of the total required for the major) at Western Michigan University. One of these must be a 5000-level class. French minors must take at least three courses (of the total required for a minor) at the 2000-level or above at Western Michigan University.

Only courses in which a grade of "C" or better is obtained can be counted toward a major or minor.

Note: No student may graduate under a catalog which is more than ten years old.
