Rika Saito, Assistant Professor of Japanese, joined the Department of Foreign Languages at Western Michigan University in Fall 2007. Before coming to Western, she taught Japanese language and literature at the University of Delaware in 2005 - 2007. She earned her Ph.D. in Japanese studies and her graduate certificate in gender studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 2005. She also completed her Master’s in sociolinguistics and intercultural communication at Penn’s Graduate School of Education in 1999.
Her research interests include language and gender, language policy, and gender related issues in modern and pre-modern literary texts. Her recent publication is “Constructing and Gendering Women’s Speech: Integrated Policy of Language through Textbooks.” U.S.-Japan Women’s Journal. No.31, 2006.
Born and raised in Tokyo, she worked there as an editor and journalist specializing in Japanese language education and intercultural communication and has written several articles in Japanese, including “Jendā Kenkyū no Shin-Chōryū [New Trends in Gender Studies]” (2002) AERA Mook vol.78, Jendā ga Wakaru [Introduction to Gender Studies], Tokyo: Asahi Newspaper, 144-145 and “Yushutsu-sareta Nihongo [Japanese Loanwords into English]” (1999) Honyaku no Sekai, vol.24, No.12, Tokyo: Babel Press, 22-23.
