Have worked with students on projects related to the distribution and diffusion of languages. Examples include an Honors Thesis entitled “Surveillance of the Balto—Finnic Speakers: A Geolinquistic Inquiry”, and a directed study on Esperanto and Tourism.

Brief description of course content/focus: An introduction to those aspects of geography concerned with the efforts of humans to cope with the environment. Included are population and settlement forms, the utilization of resources, the impact of technology on human occupancy of the earth, and the origin and dispersal of cultural elements among the various world realms. For those interested in linguistics, an introduction to the spatial distribution of the major language families. |

Brief description of course content/focus: intensive regional study of the European nations. The physical elements (climate, landforms, resources, etc.) are examined and the derivative cultural elements are identified. Emphasis is placed upon the social and economic activities of contemporary Europe (the Atlantic to the Urals). The languages of each European nation and the historical and current distribution of languages across Europe are covered in this course. |
