Students interested in majoring or minoring in German should meet with a German advisor early in their study career. Together the student and advisor will complete a major or minor slip, listing the required courses as well as the number and type of elective courses needed by the student to complete a German major or minor.
Be cautioned that requirements for the major or minor may change with each new WMU Undergraduate Catalog. The requirements applicable to each student are usually determined by the catalog year under which that student begins his/her study at WMU. Transfer students from Michigan community college are often eligible to apply the WMU catalog in effect at the time they began their studies at the 2-year institution. Your German advisor can help you determine which requirements apply to you; another good reason for meeting with your advisor as soon as possible.
Students who wish to study German for the first time should enroll in GER 1000 - Beginning German I. Those students who have already studied German or had other relevant experience should take the Monitored Placement Exam and register according to their test results. Native speakers of German should meet with an advisor to determine an appropriate beginning course for their foreign language studies at WMU.
