Cybercriminals are everywhere and the ways they try to lure you in are becoming more and more sophisticated every day.
- When in doubt, throw it out: links in email, tweets, posts, and online advertising are often the way a cybercriminal compromises your computer. If it looks suspicious, even if you know the source, it is best to delete or ignore without clicking. See phishing - don't take the bait.
- Get savvy about Wi-Fi hotspots: limit the type of business you conduct and adjust the security settings on your device to limit who can access your machine. At Western Michigan University, secure wireless is now available in some locations. See configuring WMU secure.
- Protect your money: when banking and shopping online, check to be sure the site you are using is security enabled. Look for Web addresses that begin with https:// or shttp://. Sites that begin with http:// are not secure for conducting business transactions.
