Peer Institutions
The selection of Carnegie peers is based on the 2005 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The 2005 classification system has multiple parallel classifications to provide greater flexibility in selecting peers. For WMU peers, a series of refining selections is done using both the basic framework and the "elective" classifications in the new Carnegie system.
- Basic Framework classification yields 76 public research universities (high research activity) [RU/H]
- Enrollment Profile classification refines this list to 62 institutions with the high undergraduate classification [HU] category
- Size and Setting classification refines this list to 31 institutions with the large four-year, primarily nonresidential [L4/NR] category
- Graduate Instructional Program classification refines this list finally to 15 institutions with the comprehensive doctoral (no medical/veterinary) [CompDoc/NMedVet] category
Based on the previously described selection system, the following 14 institutions most resemble WMU.
