The following tests and scores are accepted at Western Michigan University as measures of English language proficiency. Some graduate programs require a higher score.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
A score of 80 iBT, 550 PBT, is the minimum requirement for unrestricted admission. The restricted enrollment option of part-time English study and part-time academics for the first semester requires a minimum score of 61 iBT, 500 PBT.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
A score of 6.5 is the minimum requirement for admission. A score of 6.0 is required for the restricted enrollment option.
Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)
A score of 77 is the minimum requirement for admission. A score 69 is required for the restricted enrollment option.
International Baccalaureate (IB)
A grade of 5 in English at the Higher Level is required for unrestricted enrollment.
General Certificate of Education Advanced Level Pass in English
A grade of A, B, or C from one of the five British-based examining boards is required for unrestricted enrollment.
Pearson Test of English, Academic Module
A score of 45 for restricted enrollment* or 53 for unrestricted enrollment.**
*Restricted Enrollment: part-time university English study and part-time academics during the first semester.
**Unrestricted enrollment: full-time academics starting with the first semester.
Center for English Language and Culture for International Students (CELCIS)
CELCIS is WMU’s intensive English program. With successful completion of the advanced level of CELCIS and instructor recommendations you can fulfill the English language requirement and begin academic study at WMU. If you wish to enroll in CELCIS, be sure to indicate so on your application.
Successful completion of ELS level 112
Applicants who have successfully completed either four years of upper secondary school or one year of full-time tertiary (university-level) education from one of the countries listed below do not need to provide proof of English language proficiency. Other applicants must provide official scores from one of the English language proficiency tests listed above.
* (English language proficiency test will only be waived for applicants from the English language educational stream.)
