Edmund Tsang - Department Chair

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences has formally suspended admission of new students into the Industrial Design program effective October 2005, and it plans to teach out the Industrial Design courses by Spring Semester 2009. There is no one single reason but instead a series of events that have led to this decision, and it is a decision that the college and university did not take lightly.

Over the last few years the college and university have had to manage significant budget cuts as well as increases in costs.  Over these years budget cuts have also prevented the college from maintaining the industrial design facilities.  In addition, the industrial design program is now down to only one full time faculty member.  Given the current budget situation, the needed investment in the facilities and additional faculty members is beyond what is practical.  Finally, over the last decade or more, the college has strategically focused more on engineering programs and moved away from the applied sciences.

This strategic decision, along with budget constraints, has led the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences to suspend admissions in the Industrial Design program. An assessment of student course needs has been completed; this needs assessment will be used to guide planning of future course offerings and scheduling as the program is being taught out by Spring Semester 2009.
