Application Deadlines

Photo of visa stamps on passport.To ensure the timely filing of Western Michigan University nonimmigrant applications with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, U.S. State Department and U.S. Labor Department, WMU has established the following deadlines for the submission of applications to WMU International Student and Scholar Services. Late filings may result in actions that are detrimental to the scholar's immigration status.

Deadlines per application type

  • PR: Consult with the immigration officer in Immigration Compliance as soon as possible.
  • H-1B: 2 to 6 months prior to the status expiration date or start of employment. (Non-AAUP: 6-months in advance. AAUP: 6-months in advance, no later than 2-months)

  • J-1: 2 to 6 months prior to the status expiration date or start of employment.
  • TN: 1 month if abroad, 4-6 months if in the U.S. prior to the status expiration date or start of employment.
  • E-3: 2 to 6 months prior to the status expiration date or start of employment.
  • O-1: 3 to 6 months prior to the status expiration date or start of employment.

Allow additional time if the scholar or employee will need to obtain a visa overseas.
