History
The Kalamazoo scholarship fund honors Roscoe H. Douglas, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering at Western Michigan University, who passed away in January 1993. Douglas was an active SME member at Chapter 116 for many years. This fund supports an annual scholarship for a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in degree program in manufacturing engineering at Western Michigan University.
Douglas helped assemble the transmission for Sunseeker, the first solar-powered car built by WMU and helped make parts for suspension and steering for Sunseeker 93', the university's second solar-powered car.
At the time of his retirement, Douglas was the mechanical engineering department's representative to the American Association of University Professors, served as faculty advisor to the SME student chapter, and had completed robotics-teaching curriculum that involved a nationwide survey of colleges and universities
